About
Mayumi Matsunaga
Professor, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Shizuoka University, Japan.
My work connects research, education and practical applications, drawing on expertise in information and communication engineering and a technical foundation in electromagnetics and its applications.
With knowledge spanning electromagnetic technologies, AI, IT and communication systems, I consider technological possibilities alongside security, privacy and operational requirements. I use this expertise to question established assumptions and envision new systems from both technological and societal perspectives.
Expertise and Application Areas
- Information and communication engineering; electromagnetics and its applications
- Antenna design and evaluation; electromagnetic wave propagation
- Microwave, millimeter-wave and terahertz technologies
- Radar, sensing, nondestructive measurement and radio astronomy applications
- Wireless communication, RFID and IoT applications
- AI and IT applications; information and communication system planning and design
- System design incorporating information security and privacy
Connecting Technology and Society
My strength lies in understanding individual technologies and bringing together technology, people, organizations and institutional frameworks to achieve a shared purpose. This comprehensive orchestration encompasses the overall concept, system design and the coordination needed to put them into practice.
When applying AI and IT, I begin by clarifying the problems to be addressed and the functions required. I then consider system architecture, data handling, security measures and operational responsibilities as an integrated whole. My aim is to develop effective, sustainable systems that reflect both technical feasibility and the circumstances of the people and organizations that use them.
Approach to Research and Education
My research combines theoretical analysis, numerical simulation and experimental validation, progressing from an understanding of electromagnetic phenomena to design, measurement and applications. Areas of interest include antennas, propagation, radar, sensing, wireless communication, radio astronomy, nondestructive measurement and biomedical imaging.
In education, I emphasize mathematical and theoretical understanding together with the questions of why a technology is needed and how it can be used in society. Through problem definition, analysis, design, implementation and evaluation, students develop the ability to apply their knowledge to practical engineering challenges.
